What do you Need to do to Prepare for your Headshots?

Having your headshot taken is an easy and enjoyable experience. Here are a few steps you should consider to prepare yourself, ensuring you look your best.

1. Wear clothing that fits your everyday work style.

If in your role you wear a suit and tie to work everyday, then you should wear one for your headshot photo. If you work in a more business casual environment, then a dress shirt with a sport jacket may be a better fit. Avoid wearing a dress shirt only, or any thick sweaters.

2. Avoid wearing contrasting black and white together.

Unless it is requested, avoid wearing contrasting black and white, as the need to light these opposing tones require very different amount of burst from the flash units. For suits, it is best to wear mid-tone colours such as blues, greys, and browns rather than straight black.

3. Add a little bit of colour to your wardrobe.

When selecting the right shirt or blouse, choose a colour that you like and feel best complements you. For instance, I like blue and purple, so I would select clothing that are based on one of those colour pallets.

4. Ensure your hair is cut and styled, as you like best.

If you are in need of a haircut, yet decide to have your headshot taken anyway, chances are you will not like your headshot. Whether it’s a cut, or colour treatment to fill in roots, take the time to make an appointment to get your hair prepared in a way that you feel most confident and comfortable in. I for one will always get my haircut before any headshot is taken of me.

5. For men, a clean shave or trim of a beard is essential.

If you look in the mirror and have a 5 o’clock shadow, then that will be revealed in your headshot.I personally always have a fresh shave prior to having my headshot taken. If your beard needs a cleaning/trimming, then take the time to ensure your facial hair is trimmed to a clean style that is you.

6. For women, the application of make-up is complementary.

Most women apply make-up to complement their look. It is recommended to keep makeup application light and subtle. But most importantly please bring your makeup to the office/studio on the day of your shoot. Re-application and touch-ups are usually needed, especially if your headshot is to be taken later in the day.

7. Crazy hair day?

There are so many reasons why your hair might start off well styled, but end up looking a little crazy by the time we’re ready to take your photo. It is recommended that you bring a hairbrush, comb, and if used, some hair product to the shoot. Please take time before you are scheduled to begin, to step in front of a mirror and touch up your hair.

8. Bring your smile.

Your headshot is your digital introduction of yourself. How would you great a new colleague, or client? A warm smile is always inviting and shows a great amount of confidence.

If you follow this checklist, you will be ready to have us capture you in the best light possible. Look good, feel great, and we will capture you at your best. The last thing to remember is that it is just a headshot…so let’s have a little fun, and take some great shots.
